International Day Against HOmophobia (IDAHO) celebrates every year on the 17th of May, the removing of homosexuality from the World Health Organisation's list of mental illnesses. For the second consecutive year, Helem wishes to mark that day with a cultural event that will take place on Sunday, May 18th, 2008 at Drugstore.
The evening will begin with an exhibit of Arabic laws that rule over homosexuals in the Middle East. For the occasion, the Legal Bureau of Helem Montreal will present the actual state of its research on the situation of LGBTs in the Arab world.
This will be followed by the screening of the world premiere of the documentary Free to Dream, exploring the complex situation of Arabs struggling with homophobia. In this short film, Middle-Eastern gays and lesbians tell their disturbing, but especially moving stories about their ways to combine homosexuality and being proud of their origins.
All of this will be mixed with the pleasure of discovering a few unique pieces of art, some of them concerning homosexuality or homophobia and which you will be able to acquire in auctions. Raised money will serve to finance the peaceful fight against homophobia that Helem has already begun.
