534 ]
Article of the Lebanese penal code, still enforced, that criminalises ‘acts against nature’ (sodomy, zoophilic acts, pedophilia, etc.), punishable by imprisonment of up to one year. Even though actual enforcement of the law is on the decline, its mere existence is enough to plunge the LGBT community into a state of constant uncertainty and fear. Helem is working toward the modification of article 534.

Queer ]
At its origins, synonymous with ‘strange, weird, out of the ordinary’ and used pejoratively to designate homosexuals. The English adjective lost this connotation during the 1980s and became a sort of all-encompassing term that referred to all non-hetero sexual identities. With the emergence of ‘queer theory’ in American academia in the early 90s, the term ‘queer’ acquired a new meaning. In this context, it represents a vision that is essentially non-identity based, curtailing intolerance and heterosexism, denouncing and refusing all constraints which measure the quality against the notion of ‘normalcy’. Although the terms ‘allosexuel’ and ‘altersexuel’ are increasingly used in the French language, there is still no specific equivalent of the word ‘queer’ that has been unanimously agreed upon.
[
Übersexual ]
Marketing concept developed by American publicist, Marian Salzman ( the same woman behind the concept of metro sexuality!). This nice little marketing word describes a man who, while attentive to his own needs, is more oriented toward the other. He’s not ‘macho’, but virile- the kind of guy with the 5 o’clock shadow and chest hair showing over the shirt collar. This new masculine ideal is characterised by absolute confidence without vanity or brutishness, unfaltering courage, a sense of class and quality of life.
Über, in German, means ‘above’, ‘super’...
Some well-known übersexuals: Sean Connery, George Clooney, Bill Clinton, Antonio Banderas, Olivier Martinez...
